John Chapman, AKA Johnny Appleseed, was born on September 26, 1774. At 18, he traveled the country doing missionary work and planting nurseries of apple trees, which he would fence in to protect them from livestock, then leave in the care of a neighbor, who sold the trees. Johnny Appleseed asked the managers of the nurseries that they extend credit and accept barter, and he never pressed for payment. He is celebrated for his generosity and spirit of adventure. Take a look at the this video and enjoy at blast from the past. Oh, and eat an apple in honor of Johnny Appleseed.
Note: Some celebrate Johnny Appleseed Day in March, on the date of his death. But there is controversy over that date, so we have chosen to do it on his birthday, which is known and documented.
